UK NHS Portfolio

The mindset to build a portfolio shall be like building a pyramid.

You can't build your portfolio within one day.

It is good to have the habit of recording down your work.

The aim of this post is to help readers to have an idea, how is the structure of an NHS portfolio.

Let me put it into several domains.

1. Teaching

-Teaching experience

It can be formal or informal.

Formal teaching - eg you are invited and involved in teaching medical students.

Informal teaching - eg you are teaching your staff member (eg nursing student or junior ) in the clinical setting.

-Teaching methodology

Had you joined any formal teaching?

eg. Teach the Teacher Course for Doctors

2. Presentation Skills

    - presentation experience in different levels

-it could be in the hospital/ state/ international level

3. Clinical Audit & Quality Improvement

eg. involving in department changes -label the drug cupboards

4. Leadership skill

- It can be the role that you play in your clinical setting (eg. you are the leader of the resuscitating team) or in the hospital or department administrative level (eg. you are doing the roster, you are organizing the department/ hospital events, you are the chairperson of the event). You are the chairperson in an organization.

5. Achievements

-Medical (eg. you had organized International level events)

-Non-medical (eg. your sport achievement)

6. Commitment to specialty

- Any events that you joined to show your extra effort and interest in the particular specialty?

eg. POCUS, ATLS, conference in Emergency

7. Voluntary Work

- Have you been any member of the voluntary association or had you been volunteered in your community?

   - It helps to reflect that you are willing to take extra effort in taking commitment / a kind and caring, person.

8. CPD/CME Events

According to General Medical Council (GMC), a doctor must keep themself updated with knowledge. Therefore, it is always good to take notes and make a record of it as a habit.

9. Postgraduate Qualification

 - you can take a postgraduate qualification in the field that you are interested in, eg. medical education, health promotion, research methodology, diabetes &, etc.
